From humble beginnings in the basement of artist Lauren Carlo, friends came to paint and pose as models in a casual practice settingevery Monday. The goal: Paint 100 Portraits. The group quickly outgrew it's basement beginnings and moved into it's own studio with the assistance of a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council. The group has continued to grow over the past 3 years putting on 5 shows, hosting 4 internationally renowned visiting artists for workshops and demos, and participating in multiple community events including the Mayor's Christmas Parade.

The Not-So-Secret Society

From the start, the goal of the 100 Heads Society was to bring the mysterious skill of portraiture into the light. Playfully adapting aspects of secret societies into its branding became a fun twist that makes the group stand out amongst the mundane perception of other realism-based artist groups. The evergrowing heads of the mythical hydra as the society's de-facto mascot, signet rings and induction ceremonies for artists who have completed 100 portraits, and giant puppets further develops the brand's fun, tongue-in-cheek attitude.

Shows a Plenty

As our group kept growing we wanted to share with our community the progress participating artists had made so we decided to start hosting bi-yearly shows featuring all the portraits participating artists had made since the last show. The shows also served as a way to raise funds to help upgrade the studio and keep the society low cost for artists in the community. Our latest show included over 150 portraits hung at one time!

Showing Off

To raise funds and awareness for the group, we have made many merch items over the past 3 years including t-shirts, pins, stickers, magnets, and signet rings.

Reaching 100 Heads

Since I've been a part of the 100 Heads Society since the beginning, I've also participated in their weekly portrait night event. I became the 2nd artists of the group to reach 100 Portraits!
